What you need up here is a Sheriff that will put more than two Officers up here on a shift at one time. People, all the Neighborhood Watch thing is he’s pushing is a bandaid on something that requires surgery. We need more Officers up here Patrolling our streets so we can stop all the crime in town from coming up here. We just lost our Lt without a replacement in sight. When are you all going to realize that this Sheriff has no clue how to manage manpower. He thinks if you bring a bunch of people in to pick up trash, that takes care of your crime. During a time when robbing of people offering rides to hitch-hikers was common, I picked up a pair who were laughing and asked me what I would do if I were robbed by hitch-hikers such as themselves.

I nodded at the telephone poles we were passing every couple of seconds and explained I would wrap the station wagon around the next one I came to. Maybe I’d live, maybe I wouldn’t, but I’d make sure the impact was where my robbers wouldn’t.

They quit laughing and begged me to stop at the next place they could pretend was their destination — out in the middle of nowhere, late at night.

(I was stupid back then, but I think I’d still do it today.)

A neighborhood watch program is good to have…but don’t be fooled. We always have our neighbors watching out for each other. We DO pay attention to what happens around here or what/who doesn’t look quite right. You may not get caught right away, but you WILL get caught. In addition, there are several law enforcement (active /retired) who live in this area. They know what to look for too. Most of us also have security systems on our homes.

Maybe a news report should also be generated telling people how they should react if their vehicles are attempted to be carjacked. Tell them what they should probably do to keep them safe. Tell them what their rights are and how to react.

We need some folks over in that area to join the Mid County Neighborhood watch…someone might have seen something and been able to help catch the bad guy! It meets every 4th Monday of the month at Aldersgate Church at 6:30pm.
