Jackie, here's how the Repubs keep winning:

Embedded evangelical Christian communities, hmm, like the Florida Panhandle, have been convinced by non-Christian, savvy political strategists like Karl Rove to vote strictly on the issues of abortion, GLBT, guns, ten commandments, and Hollywood. Values voters. The problem with this concept of voting is that it nearly ignores that very, VERY wealthy people who have little in common with the income, educational difficulties, culture, employment picture, and yes, even the religion of the region are actually in office.

The Republicans give an illusion of being interested in the values voters, but they are truly interested in wealth generation and wealth maintenance for themselves.

If the Repubs didn't have a mystical chokehold on values voters with whom they have little in common with, only tea baggers and the wealthy would be a lock for red votes. That's not enough votes to win in elections.

If evangelicals want changes in societal morals, they need to depoliticized the worship of nature's God and work on values improvement from the heart of people and community from within the church, not from within government. (How many pregnant teens are in your church? Government cannot be expected to reduce teen pregnancy.). Values must come from the heart of people one by one, not through mass values legislation (example: prohibition).

If change to Florida's government is needed, keep in mind that the Republican party has dominated all levels of state government since the day Jeb Bush took office in January 1998! Cannot blame the Dems or independents or socialists or greens or environmentalists or Clinton, Gore, or Obama for Florida's woes after fourteen years of elephant rule.

I cannot believe that a Man who must be as intelligent as Governor Scott, is so delusional to think that he can sell to the people that he is creating jobs and bolstering education. The facts are that he has recently passed legislation that eliminates over 10,000 state jobs. I would like to know what the school teachers think on what he has done for public education. Governor Scott has to be the worst Governor in Florida's history. A certain one termer and catalyst to give Tallahassee back to the Democrats. I am not certain how good that will be either, but fairly certain it will be an improvement.

I actually agree that the FCAT Writing exam should place a great deal of emphasis on grammar basics such as punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, etc. It's awful that some of our teens graduate from high school and pass the FCAT, but can not write a proper paragraph or essay. When they are texting and using social media websites, it is acceptable to use the instant messaging jardon or to not capitalize properly; however, they continue to use that improper writing on school and scholarship essays.

I believe that now that students will be held to a higher standard to pass FCAT, their teachers will also hold them to that higher standard in the classroom. If they practice writing correctly all of the time then they will make a habit. Before this change, the trend was to make sure that students followed the writing prompt. Which means the student would pass the writing FCAT if their essay answered all of the pertinent questions; however, poor grammar didn't affect the score.
