There are people who will help or even take horses if you can’t take care of them. Letting them go is not an option because they will get hit by cars/trucks, there isn’t enought food or water for them, there are parasites that will eventually kill them…need I go on? Please call an equesterian group for help or even animal control. Don’t just let them starve. And no, there is not a harsh enough penalty for this crime!!!

Jimbo – there is a very active group in Santa Rosa County (Santa Rosa Horse Assistance Council http://www.srchac.org) that helps horse owners with feed, hay, even some medical care. If the owner then refuses to comply, animal control is called in. I can pretty much guarantee this guy wasn’t losing sleep at night over his starving horses.

You can’t let “horses go in the woods”—there isn’t enough grass, and free rang stock ended a long time ago, further more I don’t want to hit one in the road. There is help out there if you can’t afford to feed. Contact Some people get horses and they don’t how they should take care of them, (i.e. the farrier, or deworming) or the expense involved. We in the horse community need to do a better job of helping out the newbies. I personally sacrifice to keep the horses and animals in my care well tended. Unfortunately there is real cruelty out there, and there is also ignorance, also some of this is due the horse slaughter ban. I have seen several instances of horse dumping–strange horses appearing in your pasture, in the hopes they can be fed.

Instead of arresting these people, why don’t we offer some hay or horse feed.
Does anyone think this fellow wanted to starve these animals? What about paracites. We bought a horse a few years ago that was so eaten up with worms that it was nearly impossible to put weight on him. We finally got that under control and he’s gained over 120 lbs.

that just breaks my heart.why do people take on animals they cant afford?i would rather see people let them go in the woods than stave them.atleast they could find grass in the woods. punishment is not hard enough on these people.they should get jail time with no food or water and see whats its like.i will go without food to feed my horses.if you cant afford them call for help instead of starving them.someone wil take them.horse lovers will help some how.
