Thank God there are still some sane people in Tallahassee. Some things should always be the responsibility of the state, and locking people up is one of them. Privatizing prisons is a HORRIBLE idea. Stop and think it about it for a minute. No accountability, cutting corners, and gutting the number, pay, and thereofre quality of guards is down that road. How much importance do you place on keeping violent criminals off the street and away from your family? Do you really want minimum wage mall cops doing that job like we have manning the TSA? Wall Street almost destroyed the global economy for nothing but greed. BP destroyed an entire season on the Gulf Coast for the same reason. Locking people up should never have a profit motive, it should be a last resort.

Jerry, You are right about Mr. Evers and here's a link to how all voted on SB 2038:

http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2012/2038

Everyone should find it interesting that this bill didn't go to the normal vetting process in committees which would have taken it through the proper channels. Senator Evers is the chair of this committee and it has primary responsibility for oversight in all corrections, law enforcement, parole and juvenile justice issues:

(For William... It took me awhile to find the bill because it is actually SB 2038 vice 2083 as it says in your article.)

REGARDING:
“- - - if there were fewer inmates, the cost for the taxpayers would be lower"

Doubtlessly true for some; definitely not true for all.

The cost of the prison system would be zero if we never locked up anybody at all. The cost to society as a whole would be high if we allowed killers, terrorists, con men, thieves, vandals, drunk drivers, rapists to wander around freely.

Many think we shouldn’t outlaw drug use and should free all illegal drug users but even if you completely legalized drugs and pardoned all imprisoned under those laws (which President Obama has the power to do), you'd free up less than 22% of inmates. Further, most of those have associated crimes which also involve predation on the weakest among us.

James, Senator Evers voted NO. He was opposed to the bill from the very beginning all the way through to the end.

Here's an idea - stop handing out prison sentences for everything under the sun. For many years, prisons have been a cottage industry. making money off everything from concession items to phone calls. There was a scandal a few years back, even the Cabinet level Secretary was in on the kickbacks. My point is, if there were fewer inmates, the cost for the taxpayers would be lower. The responsibility for care ofthe inmates is the government that put them there, not a "private contractor" who has no actual law enforcement authority.

What is Greg Evers' position on this? The article doesn’t say, but I would venture a guess that he voted along with his buddy Gaetz to push this ill fated measure onto the public. I will never agree that the state can or should ever abrogate its responsibility in what most people consider an inherently governmental function - that is operating prisons. What’s next? Contracting the state's National Guard? Don't laugh because there is language in a one of the bills in this session that will allow the state to contract out any function the governor sees fit.
