I was at the Capitol when all the hubbub started over the prison privatization. Senators Thrasher and Alexander tried to shove the bill through. Senators Fasano , Sach and Evers asked questions that could not be answered. Such as how much will it cost the taxpayers (not sure) will it save money (it should) will there be additional costs (shouldn't be) who will pay back the taxpayers for the 500 million dollars that built those prisons (private company should but haven't brought that issue up) whats the 600 plus thousand it the bill for (not sure). Thrasher and Alexander who drafted the bill should know these answers but tapped danced around the answers. I was proud of all the Senators that stood up to those guys and the Senate President Haridopolos who where trying to sell the state prisons to the highest bidder. But sad because they stood up for the taxpayers they are now being punished by the Senate President and his cronies. Facts are the savings are not guaranteed , 4000 to 4500 corrections officers will lose their jobs , unknown how many secondary service jobs will be lost , some of the prisons are still under bond and still being paid for by taxpayers and initial costs to the taxpayers will be 55 million the first year alone. Also private prison guard standards are not as stringent so you could have past criminals watching criminals , think how that will work. In the bill it states that if a prisoner escapes they are not responsible for the escapee after 48 hrs. I could go on and o n about the safety issues to the public and cost to taxpayers but it would take too long. Thanks again to those Senators that stood up for the taxpayers of Florida.

REGARDING:
"The standoff intensified Wednesday, when Haridopolos stripped Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, of his role as chairman of the Senate Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee. Fasano has been perhaps the most-outspoken critic of the privatization plan.

"Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, said he didn’t think Fasano was committed to making needed budget cuts, which includes the prison-privatization plan."
