Who actually owns this property.? I don't understand why this wasn't dealt with several years ago when they removed the storage tanks that were leaking.

Can anyone give me a contact number for this investigation? My grandmother and aunt both lived on Hecker (aunt still does) and both have had breast cancer in the past 5 years. My grandmother had a double mastectomy and my aunt had a single mastectomy and she is still dealing with issues. I would like someone to know that the possiblity of this area having contributed to their cancer is likely.

Thats nothin'. I remember back in the late sixties into the seventies at Gradys Chevron in Century there was a pit in the back where they threw all the used motor oil. It looked like the LeBrea tarpits in California. I wonder if that ever got scooped out?

For for the love of Pete and no one from EPA checked on this place at
the time and then a restaurant was built there.
Just how would anyone recoup on this if they waited till years after
the company was defunct and gone.
An ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure......

To Jane,
Why not the property owner ?
Why are the county taxpayers on the hook to determine if a private property is contaminated ?
Is the county going to survey every private property in the county ?

Now I can see why they might if the county is looking into purchasing this property to expand the public parks that it borders on.

So far the article says nothing as to why the county is doing this survey.
Only that they are, with your money.

Am I mistaken in thinking that Century is actually in Escambia County? (To jeeperman) If so then Escambia County is responsible for looking into this problem.

And so why is Escambia County (and taxpayers) footing the bill to survey this property ?

So glad they are finally investigating that. Just N. on Hecker Rd. there have been so many that have died of cancer. I always believed there was something in that area that was affecting the residents.

Yes that is the old Babo's Restaurant. In high school I would eat there and they had the best fried chicken around. Hopefully it's not contaminated.
