Kathy, they are paying out over ten times what they are taking in. Excuse, me, WE are paying out over ten times what the insured are paying in. This isn't some big company getting rich off of the poor innocent people, this is the state run insurance company formed to provide insurance for people who decide to build where nobody with an ounce of sense would offer to insure them. They get their money in part by raising rates on others in other parts of the state who DID NOT decide to build multimillion dollar homes in sinkhole prone places.

And no, not all parts of Florida are so prone to such damage, nor are the people of other parts obligated to cover their desires.

David for paying as you go

Then no one could or should build any home in Florida. 2000% increase is crazy. Insurance companies make profit that is what they do and if they lose a little profit, oh well. A sink hole can happen any where in this State. Insurance is suppose to be about protecting you from those things that are unexpected and expensive. We already pay a huge amount, but the should pay nothing?

REGARDING:
"opposition to the proposed rate increases has gotten so loud that it can’t be ignored no matter how much the rate increases might make sense financially."

If they aren't willing to pay enough to cover the expected costs due to building in sinkhole prone areas, the other simple solution is to provide the coverage their premiums cover. If a thousand dollars worth of premiums will pay for ten thousand dollars worth of sinkhole damage, pay the ten thousand. If it will only pay for five thousand, pay the five thousand.

If the lenders find this unacceptable, perhaps they will stop loaning money to build in places where houses are likely to be destroyed by sinkhole formation.

Just don't tell people who didn't decide to build and buy in sinkhole prone areas that they have to pay more to cover the wishes of the less careful.

David for reason and pity on the cautious
