It amazes me how the system works. It seems like they care more about dogs then children. If you are mean to animals you get a worse punishment than what you would get for abusing a child. What is the world coming to. He should be behind bars. It’s like he got a pat on the back. It really is scary that people like that get away with messing with children.

I find this very disturbing, I am the father of 12 & 10 year old daughters and it outrages me to see such a lite sentence!!! His actions were both immature and immoral. With such easy treatment no wonder acts like this continue to happen! I believe that by taking a plea he admitted his guilt now what is to stop him from acting in such an irresponsible manner or to worn other people/women of his passed action if he does not have to register a offender. I don’t see the justice here at all, for the young girl or the dogs dumped by the wayside.

Dusty has a great father and I know that he is hurting from all of this. Why take the dogs if you are only going to dump them?

Those of us that spent countless hours searching the area for those dogs ABANDONED by Burkett, are very disappointed by the *slap on the wrist* he was given. Sentencing guidelines for such a crime call for up to a year in prison and $5,000 fine. As a shelter volunteer, I’ve witnessed first hand the awful conditions that abandoned animals come in with, if they’re *lucky*. Many, if not most, abandoned animals don’t survive for long due to starvation, disease, hit by car, etc. It’s against the law to abandon a pet for these reasons. You’re basically subjecting them to a life of hell. Burkett should have received a lifetime ban on animal *ownership*.

I’m grateful to the State Attorney’s Office for filing the animal cruelty charges!!
