To all those who commented...
Be very careful how you judge, one day you may be in a similar situation. A split second can change your world.

I knew Mac when he was a younger man. He was fun loving and caring. A HUMAN BEING. Praying for his sweet family, the person who was driving, and the guy in the wheelchair. I also know in my heart of hearts that Mac is with the Lord today.

Jason we are very sad about your brother dying so unexpectedly while trying to do a good deed. Everyone who really knows the Davis family understands that Mac could have lived his life differently and had more support from his family, but he chose his own path. Draw closer to those who remain, continue to take care of your young family, and seek the Lord's help in everything. Think of him often as our memories help keep our loved ones alive in our hearts.

"If you want to help the homeless, give your money to a charity that deals with them."

How about getting out of your air conditioned car, and praying with them? Asking them if they are hungry, then buy them a meal. Ask them if they knwo Jesus and have accepted him as their Savior. That way when they get run over they can at least have eternal life with Christ. Not preaching or judging. But the response indicates, at least to me, that giving money to the charity insulates one from the smelly dirty vagabond. Remember he/she is still a child of God; they are ALL sheep, and we are to protect the flock.

In reply to "What is the real problem?"...
A contributing factor is all the folks that continue to enable the transient population here in Escambia County. When drivers "donate" money to these beggars, they are encouraging them to stay. A majority of them use the money for booze, which in turn makes them a hazard when they wander the roadways at all hours.
If you want to help the homeless, give your money to a charity that deals with them. If you prefer that they waste their lives on our roads, keeping handing them change!

REGARDING:
"pushing another person in a wheelchair across Highway 29 just north of Hood Drive. About 12:24 a.m"

Looking back, that may not be a good time to be out and about.
Hard to see and be seen.
A number of impaired drivers around (not that this one was, just that they are out then and drivers and pedestrians have to be on the lookout for them too).
Limited mobility.
