Also, if you're in the lower ranks, you clean those heads regardless of what your sex is and the men/women sign on the door. The UCMJ is there for a reason: to promote and ensure a functioning military, able to answer the call at any time, in any place, in the defense of our nation. The rules are time tested and each have a place. As a society, we have pushed the envelope on so many issues and the military is slow to "catch up" because the military is always the first to be used for guinea pigs but the last to be recognized for the good they do. The military and each of its members are supposed to function as a team, not individuals (and that includes sexuality), because that same individuality can destroy a team. I don't think that those who've never served get that. You are only as strong as your weakest link. That being said, this issue should never have gone beyond the command level, and those in command should have paid very close attention to the motives of all involved. Hopefully, wisdom is gained as you gain in rank and stature, but, sadly, it doesn't always happen. Having served in the US Navy, I’ve watched all this wondering how it would blow up.

As a retired Air Force TSGT, / Supervisor I know a little about the problems of gay /lesbian lifestyle and the problems it causes in the ranks. I supervised up to 40 troops. Discipline and Order are required in a military unit! I had more lesbians in my later years. Gay men were less open and a little harder to manage. Lesbianism seemed to be more acceptable in the ranks, because they wanted the female quota.. It is not a matter of IF THEY CAN DO THEIR JOB. It is more in maintaining a functional unit with outside influnces at a minimum so that the mission can be accomplished. Most of my career , I was a "fatboy" I had a stack of medals, a ream of "attaboy" letters. Job well done. It did not matter, I was a fatboy (10 pounds overweight) so I was reprimanded, denied promotion and blacklisted, BUT every officer came to me for advise and guidance. Was I capable of doing my job? YOU BET! Did people respect me? YOU BET. Am I bitter? NO WAY! If I coulb be back in the job I'd go in a minute. It is a matter of reputation, respect and common sense ,not to let things get to me. Even if the young man is not gay, He should have had sense enough to know the appearance of his actions were wrong, especially in a barracks/dorm environment. There were tables and chairsavailable. And yes, All sorts of dastardly deeds have gone on in barracks, I have seen and could give you a list a mile long.
