I have yet to see an article where an AKC registered American Staffordshire or Staffordshire Bull Terrier got loose and attacked pets and people. It seems people who go through the trouble (and expense) of purchasing an AKC registered "pit bull" are much more responsible than these idiots who are buying (and getting for free) these unregistered pit bulls and pit mixes. Professional AKC breeders do not breed aggressive animals, they are very selective which dogs are bred whereas Joe Bob will simply take 2 pits and breed them, not knowing or caring what the dogs' backgrounds are.

People who purchase AKC dogs keep them updated on their shots, keep them contained on their property, pay for obedience training and are very aware - and careful - of the power of their dog. However, in my experience, most people are only concerned about getting a "pit bull" and don't care what its background could possibly be - they don't bother to get the dogs spayed or neutered ("I wanna sell pit bull puppies!"), they don't bother getting the dog vaccinated, they buy a cheap $5 plastic coated tether for the dog and then want to act so surprised that the dog broke it, attacked and shredded someone's Yorkie being walked on a leash.

I am an owner of a Pit Bull and always will be. Me and my boyfriend have both raised a pit bull together and he is the biggest lap dog ever. He is absolutley terrified of the neighbors cat, so to say all pit bulls are dangerous is far from a true statement. Like most of you have said, it all depends on how they are raised, and that goes for every breed. My mom is the owner of 3 chihuahuas, one being shy at first then friendly, one who loves to play, and one who hates everyone (she was given to us from another owner). Its not the breed, its the owners. I can't stand it when we take our dog out for walks and people freak out when they see him. I do feel sorry for the worker, but at the same time I dont think the dog should be put to sleep, unless this behavior has been seen before. You can't really judge a dog just by the way it acts towards another dog, all dogs are protective. I will always own a pit bull and wouldnt trade the breed for anything.

you say your dog has NEVER TRIED TO BITE well there is your key word TRIED, all dogs bite and trust me I love all animals. Pit Bulls are not all bad it's how you raise them that is right but all dogs will bite. If you love you dogs protect them from people by putting them up when you have people over, restraine them like they should be, because anything can happen at any time and then your dog will be in trouble so protect them if you love them.

My dog is a pit bull and she is the sweetest dog ever. She loves people and gets along with my cats. Its the way you treat your animal that makes it aggressive! If you tie a dog up all day long and never play with it, sure it will become aggressive because it has no other way to channel its energy! If you give a dog proper care and attention, it will be a loving family pet. My pit bull has NEVER tried to bite anyone. Dont judge a breed by its "reputation", judge a breed by its owner!

I know all too well how hard the ACOs of the county are overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated, I used to be one x 65. Their lives are put in danger every day and your post is 100 percent correct and unless you have been in their shoes and risked your life for the public of escambia county you don't have a clue. The dogs are getting worse each year from my observation but I will disagree on one thing, I don't think all of the dogs are trained protection dogs, some of them are just pure plain mean idiots like the owners and "no public" don't blow a gasket and say there is no such thing because there is such a thing as bad breeding, inbreeding, etc that can make a dog just plain mean as well as environmental circumstances that factor in temperament problems. There is an overpopulation of pitbulls in the county as well and I don't know how to solve this problem since it would not be fair to single out the "bull"owners and breeders alone for kennel licensing or breeders licensing because there again you have your good owners and breeders and your bad ones. There is just not going to be an easy solution.

First let me say ALL DOGS bite if they have teeth they can bite, I hate when a Dog Owner says oh my dog has never bitten or my dog will not bit because honey they are sooooo wrong. I sure hope this worker that is a temp employee at the Shelter heals up fast. I can say the dog did not bite another dog it had attacked another person and was being held but the victum decided they didn't what anything done to the dog so of course the Escambia County Animal Shelter had to release the dog they had no other choice but to let the owner come and get the dog. People need to respect dogs and train them right and if you decide you want a bad dog to guard your drugs because trust me that is what most of the Bad Pits are trained for to guard the drug house of Escambia County Florida you need to think twice because people are getting injured by dogs everyday. The Animal Control Officer of Escambia County bust their butts work day in and day out putting there live in danger everyday and they get injured all the time the public just doesn't know. The ACO are very short handed and have no help and they work 24 hours a day someone is always on duty. So until you put yourself in there shoes and have done there job please don't talk bad about them I say God Bless them because to do that job you have to love animals or you could not do it with all the animals that are trained to attack their life's are in danger.

It is so sad that these dogs have a bad name. I once had the attitude that they were bad until I raised a couple of Pitts. They are wonderful family dogs if raised the right way. I have many videos with my Pitt taking care of kittens, playing and sleeping with young children, no aggression whatsoever towards anyone we socialized her the right way.

REGARDING:
" Believe it or not, there are more attacks by chows than by xxxxx"

Likely you're right. Chows tend to be sneaky little devils--slip up behind you and bite without even barking first, nonetheless, part of what makes it noteworthy is the damage done by the attack

David for few fatal attacks
