Glad this person is going to be OK.
Highway 99 is the worst paved road in North Escambia, my opinion. It should be widened and repaved, with markings/lines.

They could upgrade all the roads if they wanted to do so.We’ve paid it in Local Option Sales Taxes (LOST) years ago. By that, I mean all clay roads could be paved well enough to go years without major maintenance required.

They decided to not do so unless they had right of way deeded to them sufficient to give proper shoulders and ditches for every road. Many people–most people– chose to not do so. I know of some roads where the people living on both sides of the road are so close that they couldn’t give the required land without giving up their houses. They just couldn’t do it that way.

In response the county dropped maintenance on a number of roads and even closed off access to roads which had been open for decades.

In the mean time they continue to find other things to do with the LOST money, one of the earliest examples of which was loaning themselves several million dollars to freeze the Civic Center for hockey purposes. They were thrilled they could do it that way since they didn’t have to pay interest on the loan and never had to actually pay it back, just pretend to intend to do so.

REGARDING:

Land is assessed lower up here, therefore lower property taxes per acre.

Houses are assessed lower up here, therefore lower property taxes per acre.

Dwellings are further apart up here, therefore fewer tax payers per acre.

Fewer people up here, therefore lower sales taxes per acre.

Thus, I doubt we pay anywhere near as much per capita or per square mile as those folks downstream from us.

I agree with you Frank about the beaches around here, the truth is we most likey pay just as much taxes up here as thety do in Pcola..however when you mention your in the Northwest end of the county that dont exist..Northwest Florida is thought of as Pcola..

All I can say is, yes there are many areas up this way that need completing or repairing or widening. However, they are what they are and have been this way for quite some time. The problem comes in when people drive way too fast for the road conditions or for their driving ability. And, not saying she was, BUT way too many accidents are caused by distractions…many using cell phones while driving and not paying attention to the road. Sooo, we all should pay more attention and thank God we are not in places like Pensacola. Thank God for the paving that was done instead of everyone still living on dirt roads. I know I am grateful.And maybe one day they can upgrade ALL the roads.

ya i travel this road everyday back n fourth to school at northview and itz so rough i almost put my truck in the ditch one time..itz pathetic how bad that road is

There are not enough $300,000 homes built on these roads, and aparantly no commisioner’s homes either. Hwy 99 is in terrible shape from the state line all the way to Barrineau Park road. It is sad when Baldwin County can spend the money to pave Duck Place Rd through the middle of nowhere, and a County the size of Escambia (Fl) can’t repair dangerously narrow pot holed heavily traveled roads! I pray every day that a school bus doesn’t meet a log truck in one of these sharp curves. Thank God that the driver in this accident only had minor injuries! It’s time that the county commision got their act together, or got replaced with somone that will! William if you were to decide to run a story on this issue, You would have overwhelming support. Thank You for allowing us to vent our frustrations, maybe it will get some attention.

Hwy 99 is a county road I believe. Escambia county would have to pave/widen it. I have to drive it everyday to work and it is killing my truck.

Frank, you are right about this road. You would think since this is a major route to three schools this road would have been repaired and widened like highway 97 is being done. Bet if it was a road to Washington high school it would be repaved and repaired. Pine Barren Road is a route to Northview High, and it’s in awful shape north of Breastworks Road also.
