True, but there are distinctions between what the individual does and what the rulers do. An individual can let himself be beaten up. Rulers must provide for public safety.

America has the peculiar situation in which the individual is part of the government. Folks still act like the President is the King but our government is not set up that way. Our country is not biblical, no king to rule over us.

Even if it were, Jesus for example never said destroy your swords, but rather instructed his followers to sell them. I forget the context, but the important point to my way of thinking was that the swords would still be out there, still be in use. He fully expected a government which used judicious violence to continue to exist.

So we are left with the question regarding what to do about people who kill other people. Only a few would say, “Turn the other cheek, let them continue to kill.”

On the other hand, there may be cases in which killing was needed to preserve the killer’s life or that of another–self defense. (I don’t think it applies here, but it does happen.) That’s one of the reasons we need trials, to establish exactly what happened, if the killing were done by the accused, if it might be considered justified and if not, what would be the proper response. We have laws, judges, juries to deal with those questions. They aren’t perfect but we keep trying.

Pa, I have no sympathy for murders, drug dealers etc. But before you go quoting the bible about an eye for an eye this is what Jesus said.

Matthew 5:38-39 Jesus clearly tells us, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

I always hate when people want to quote the Bible but take it out of context.

Of course if you just want to go by the old testament and forget about what Jesus says then that’s up to you. I am not good like Jesus and think if this Cox man is found guilty he should get the death penalty. But I’m not pretending to do what Jesus would want and I’m not trying to make it OK by quoting scripture.

By the way. Do you really want to live by the laws of the old testament? I don’t think you do. There is some pretty crazy stuff in there.

I agree with Daffy Duck….Crime WILL decrease if we would stop spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to let this man go to trial then to jail for the tax payers to feed and clothe. I believe if we would live as the bible says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth we would be so much better off. These slums act out and do this because they know they get to go to prison-meet new slums and get a place to lay their heads and a 3 course meal without worry of how to pay their bills like us taxpaying citizens… so sick of it. That is only one of the reasons America is broke now…and why the jails are overcrowded.
