To J.Michael Ates:
WELL SAID COUSIN!!
Jason NEVER set out to end a life but he refused to let somone end his or the Deputy with him!!
My job is easy, I don't have to decide if I have to shoot or not(and 99.9% of the people quoting on here don't either) and I thank all of the LEO's who put a vest on to increase their chances of survival, in order to come home to their families after protecting me and everyone else. You can't expect a Deputy to get shot, and then ask if you can return fire to save his own life! It took only seconds to decide and no can understand what it is like to work under these conditions except Law Enforcement Officers and our Military Men and Women who defend us everyday. If Michael Lee had more respect for the Law, he would never been in that situation. He obviously did not respect Human life, trying to kill somone, somones SON, HUSBAND,FATHER,and BROTHER!

As a veteran law enforcement officer with over 25 years experience, I can say that the outcome of this incident was dictated by Mr. Lee. I've been in situations on many occasions where the use of deadly force was justified, but I did not fire a shot. In each of those incidents, a person either had a weapon and hesitated when ordered to drop it, or somebody was reaching for a weapon but did not actually pick it up and point it at me or anybody else.If they had done so, I would have had no choice but to shoot or die. Sorry, but I don't get paid to commit suicide and not defending yourself in a situation like that is suicide. In this case, Mr. Lee was the one who shot first and struck Deputy Ates. Several civilian witnesses heard the deputies yelling at Mr. Lee to drop the weapon before they returned fire. To me, that speaks volumes about intentions of both deputies. Both were willing to hold their fire, placing themselves in further jeopardy, in order to give Mr. Lee a chance to drop his weapon and surrender. Mr. Lee chose not to surrender and to continue to place the lives of the deputies and any civilians around him in jeopardy, so the deputies had no choice but to shoot. The irony is that if Mr. Lee had surrendered without forcing the deputies to shoot him, he would have probably been out of jail by now on bond and cooking meth somewhere else instead of looking after his daughter or taking the effort to turn his life around.

I'm beginning to see where this warped view of social justice comes from, if Momma K is Michael Lee's mom. The statement was made that Escambia Sheriff's shoot first and ask questions later. Sounds like he was raised to have no respect for authority, and he paid the ultimate price. In my view, it's extremely difficult to ask questions of people who are shooting at you. If folks had answered the door properly and allowed themselves to be questioned, they would still be alive. In jail maybe, but alive. This is not rocket science folks, don't shoot at the police, don't cook dope, etc, etc, etc.

To Bryan and Mamma K:
Michael Lee died because he tried to kill My Brother and another deputy. If you think that Jason or the other Deputy had a choice, you are retarded!
Michael Lee made his decision and he paid for it with his life and I dont care if he was 21 or 61, 15 or 100. You live by the gun you die by the gun .
Now on a personal not: BETTER HIM THAN MY BROTHER OR HIS PARTNER!!!

Note to ECSO: Please be sure these deputies involved are ordered to meet with older officers, in a private setting outside of the office, who have been in the same situation. Preferably at their residence, where it's more comfortable for a conversation. An officer can feel he /she is weak when dealing with the aftermath of this, and feel belittled by going to see a head doctor, who has set behind a desk or in a classroom and never encountered such an ordeal. Our S.O. has lost several Good Officers because the department forgets after the news media does that these cops will remember on a daily basis, the rest of their life, what they encountered. Ask me how I know???? Been there......still dealing with it....... ....And to you people that believe a cop should "wound" a shooter.........GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!

Yeah Bryan, if it's so bad here in America get on outta the country! Good Job to our fine officers out there. I hope while your sitting here bashing the cops that you never are need for them to help you. If you knew he needed help it's the friends, and families responsiblities to help that person. Well, that's just my own personal opinion, but I'm allowed that because I live in a country that has freedom of speech. Momma K, you must have had a bad experience yourself to know so much about the police, and their jobs. I have never saw an Officer use deadly force first, then ask questions. He might of been a Father, Son, Brother, and Friend, but he also was a cop killer or tried to be. I do have sympathy for everyone that has been affected by this whole ordeal, but you chose your own life. "If you want to make your life better, that's your job not someone elses" Prayers go out to everyone!

REGARDING:
"Judicial System left him behind???? You are supposed to go through life without going through the judicial system."

Good point. The judicial system is not set up to raise people, it should be set up to protect the innocent.
