Actually, yes, prescription drugs are illegal if in the hands of anyone other than the one to whom the prescription permitted them.

And the point is that making them illegal makes them more valuable because it limits the supply and its ability to meet demand.

Making them more valuable makes them more profitable to those willing to ignore the law.

Making them more profitable makes their suppliers tempted to increase demand so they can make even more profit.

Having people push illegal drugs makes more users than would happen if the mark-up were as low as-say-for aspirin.

Thus, the attempt to fight drug abuse is causing some drug abuse. There will always be some but this seems to actually make it worse.

Making it illegal and expensive also sometimes tempts users to commit other crimes to pay for it. They break into homes or rob people. This endangers everybody. If you knew you could not stop people from using killer drugs, wouldn’t it be better if only they died, rather than them kill your loved ones while trying to get enough money to get a fix?

This child (I think I still remember her playing Tee Ball with my children, years back) would not have been selling drugs if she only made a nickel per sale. Nor would users be buying from her if they could get cheaper, better quality dope elsewhere.

We don’t care about drug abusers, convincing ourselves they aren’t really human unless we personally know them, but the danger to abusers is also increased by making drugs illegal or hard to get.

Pushers/suppliers may be tempted to adulterate the drugs even above their natural danger.

They may not know how to produce drugs safely. (Lead in old radiators have made some moonshine (another deadly drug) even more deadly.) Some even have meth labs in the trunks of their cars and endanger anyone who might be hurt if the car blew up while they were near it. (Note, this is not just the no-longer-to-be-considered-humans, but even real people like you who might be hurt.)

Amounts might vary dangerously. (Yes, all are dangerous, but even more dangerous if the dose goes up or down two or three times.) People thinking they need a certain amount to get high might get a purer dose and it turn out that amount would be lethal, killing them even quicker than just using in the first place would be. This would end their chance to repent–excuse me, religious overtones there–decide to get off the drugs and get clean.

I propose the consumption of anything which hurts the user be allowed after the user signs disclaimers stating they know their decision is likely to kill or otherwise harm them and holding all harmless involved in the matter. You might have to consider revoking driver’s licenses in some cases since those under the influence are dangerous. Their names would also be on a register so police could quickly check any erratic behavior which endangers others to be sure they do not do so.

Just a thought, not that I want anyone on any kind of drugs but that I think making them illegal is likely making things worse.
