I havent talked to the man many times but I do know him. He is like family to me. I wish people would quit saying he was drinking. He swarved to hit a deer and is in fact thankful he is alive. We are all thankful hes alive. Just goes to show someone was looking out for him and he has some left over business that the maker wants him to do.

char has a good point.. i obviously do not know if alcohol played a role in this, and honestly, until some sort of results come about, neither does anyone. i know as well as any of you that you can know someone really well, and think "my word, they would never do THAT!" and in most cases, you might be right. just because it happens doesn't mean it's an every-day occurance. i've been known to have a beer on the ride home, albeit very few and far between. guess how many people know.... just ME!

and in response to your post, bill phillips; just because he *was* a volunteer fire fighter at one time doesn't mean that his service excludes him from any scrutiny about wasting tax dollars. hypothetically, -IF- he were drinking he should have known better and definitely not be excused for "getting paid back" for the time he spent volunteering his own time. after "re-evaluating" the situation, that is my conclusion.

He is really blessed. People shouldn't assume things. Just because there were beer bottles and beer cans doesn't necessary mean they were opened. He needs to really Thank God that he is alive whether or not if he was drinking or not.

Thank you William! All the hard work you do for the north end is really appreciated. Maybe someone will look at this bad wreck and SLOW DOWN. A record should be kept of all the accidents along this Atmore Hwy. We who travel it are the ones that can stop these senseless accidents. The good Lord had His hand on this young man or we would have another death to add to the rest.

Well glad I didn't put my two cents in on this one.
He was out at 2:15 and he wrapped himself around a telephone pole
and required a lot of services that we all pay for in our taxes.
So it is kind of our business, and most ppl I think go by the thought
process, that if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like
a duck, then it's probably a darned duck!

It is for that reason I jumped to the same conclusion as some of the
others.

All I can say at this point is the facts will come out, so he will be
put in the clear or not.

But to all the family members, I say this " I'm sure you know him
well, and I wish him god speed in his recovery.

Weather the person was drinking or not, it is a blessing they are alive as the photos look bad! Do I condone drinking and driving, no. do I think this person was drinking and driving, who knows, not me. I just thank my maker that highway 97 did not claim another life. the lesson here to me is hit the deer.

listen, everyone is so quick to comment on an accident that they see on here, never stopping to think that it may be some one's family member or not. another thing just because you see a can then you should obvioulsy be able to see that the can is unopened and the chest is on the back. besides opened or unopened if don't know then you should keep your mouth shut, cause this is my family and i don't like seeing the garbage just as if it was your family you wouldn't either........................

The Mystery of the Can Solved:

I went back and looked at the original pictures, and I know what happened to the can mentioned in the comments below. It was knocked out of the truck to the ground by emergency worker or equipment. Notice in photo #62 in the gallery you see the can. Also notice in #62 the extrication device (called a "ram", I think) between the driver's door and the dash with hoses leaded out of the truck.

Now notice in photo #64 in the gallery that the can is gone, but the "ram" dash is also missing from truck. There is an unposted photo between the two that shows the can on the ground outside the truck.

And...BTW...the can is obviously unopened in several photos.
Simple explanation: The emergency worker removing the ram, or the hoses on the ram itself, knocked the can out onto the ground.
